Maui artist Randy Jay Braun has emerged as one of the nation’s most recognized fine-art photographers. His original collection of black and white, hand-colored photography conveys the beauty, spirit, and essence of the Hawaiian people. And more recently, his portfolio of brilliantly colorful island landscapes has captured yet a larger audience.
After graduating from Occidental College, Braun arrived in Hawaii as a student-intern at Kamehameha Schools in 1982; he says, “I loved the cultural diversity of Hawaii. I grew up in a very homogenous Kansas farm town. This was a fun challenge and an interesting reversal. I immersed myself in the ancient island culture.”
Braun’s hula kahiko images have become internationally recognized as iconic representations of the Hawaiian culture. They can be found anywhere in the islands – on scores of CD covers, in hotel rooms and restaurants, on phone book covers, posters and cards. His images were recently made into large bronze statues gracing the entry to Waikiki’s Hilton Hawaiian Village. The Hawaii Visitor’s Bureau presented Braun with a 3-Kahili Award for his efforts to preserve and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.
The Randy J Braun Gallery is located in Makawao, Maui. His work can also be seen in all Pictures Plus and Plus Interiors stores throughout the state of Hawaii.
