Art on Demand

At Pictures Plus, we are continually searching for creative and original pieces to help grow our Art on Demand program. We are deeply committed to supporting local artists here in Hawaii, both established professionals and emerging artists.

Our technical expertise in printing and framing provides a unique platform for these artists to share their talents with audiences near and far. In addition, we have invested substantial resources to help provide exposure to the artists in our program through various marketing channels, including our print websites, in-store wall art samples, catalogs, brochures, local events and more. All of these resources are managed in-house to ensure that our artists receive maximum exposure with minimum risk involved.

How the program works

Art that is selected into the Art on Demand program is featured online at picturesplusprints.com and/or islandartandsole.com, on our social media platforms, and in various marketing promotional campaigns, including print ads, email blasts and in-store artist events. Art samples are also on display at all 6 Pictures Plus and Plus Interiors retail locations, as well as select Island Sole retail locations.

Customers can select from the following  mediums: canvas, metal, masonite (framed), photo paper or plastic laminate (for printing on cabinet doors / tabletops). In addition, they can select any custom size ranging from 4"x6" up to 43"x93" for metal or up to 54"x100" for canvas (as long as the image resolution supports it). They can also select from various finishing options, such as gallery wrapped edges for a canvas print, or a frame add-on for a metal or canvas print.

Artists receive a royalty on all images printed, either for customers or store samples. Royalty fees are paid quarterly. Below, you will find answers to some frequently asked questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of artwork are you looking for?

To get a feel for whether your artwork might be well-suited to our Art on Demand program, please browse our collections online. Most of the artwork we carry includes decorative and fine art pieces, with a strong inclination  towards Hawaii scenery and lifestyle paintings and photography.

How do I submit my artwork for consideration?

Interested artists should submit JPGs of their "Top Ten" images via email or file sharing, as well as a link to their online portfolio (if one is available) to submissions@picturesplus.com. A maximum of 10 images can be submitted. Due to the volume of submissions received, additional images will not be reviewed by the art committee. Hi-resolution images are NOT required for the initial submission.

Once I submit my Top Ten images, how long does the art review process take?

Every third Tuesday of the month (AKA the "cut-off date"), the Submissions Committee reviews all artwork received in the past month. Artists can expect a response by the fourth week of the month for any artwork received by the cut-off date. 

How many images should I be prepared to submit?

Initially, artists should submit a minimum of 5 images, and no more than 10 images, for consideration. Upon acceptance into the Art on Demand program, artists can submit up to 50 hi-resolution images for inclusion. However, not all art pieces may be included in the final online selection, and images or artists that have not sold for an extended period of time may be periodically removed at the discretion of the Submissions Committee.

What are the next steps if my images are selected?

Artists accepted into the program will receive a link to upload their files, as well as documents to be completed and returned, including a W9 form, Contract Agreement, and Art Submission spreadsheet. Upon receipt of all necessary documents and hi-resolution images, the artist will enter the queue to be added to the website. Turnaround time to have artwork published on the website is 2-4 weeks, contingent upon current load. Artists are added to the site in the order in which their completed documents are received.

Is your Art on Demand program non-exlusive?

Yes! Our Art on Demand program does not preclude any artist from selling their participating artwork directly, and/or through channels other than those provided by The Art Source, Inc (dba Pictures Plus). We make no representations in regards to the volume of art we can sell for any given artist, and therefore encourage our artists to leverage their creative talents by pursuing any additional revenue streams available to them.

What are the print image requirements?

Recommended file format: .JPG  

Recommended minimum pixel dimensions: 2400 x 3000 (the larger the better). A 2400 x 3000 pixel image will print 16"x20" at 150 DPI. However, images with more pixels allow us to offer customers more print options.

Files should be ready to print and should require no editing. The software for tracking and printing royalty images uses the .JPG file format and uses a resolution of 150 DPI along with the pixel dimensions to calculate the maximum print size of the file, regardless of what resolution the image is originally saved at. 

All watermarks should be removed from photographs. Fine art, such as paintings, can include an artist signature at an appropriate size. Our graphic design team can assist with signature placement, if needed.

For photographs that have been digitally enhanced, please note that oversharpening the image may cause visible noise when printed at a larger size. As a result, we may limit size options accordingly. 

Will you crop or alter my image?

While there are times when we may have to crop the image slightly to fit a standard size or to suit a customer's needs, our preference is to always print the image as the artist intended and as it was submitted. Image files should be submitted in the final form that you intend it to be printed in. This includes any cropping of the image, the proper orientation (horizontal or vertical), and the intended width-to-height ratio.
